We are looking at the long-awaited continuation of the space strategy with RPG elements from domestic developers, which has been transferred to mobile platforms.
I remember very well how I could spend hours meditatively playing Space Rangers on my computer. True, the first part passed me completely, but the second part stuck in my memory for a long time. Therefore, the announcement of the release of the continuation for mobile devices 'Space Rangers: Legacy' I met with enthusiasm, because the original game could be perfectly transferred to tablets or even smartphones.
I’ll get ahead of myself and say that the new part of the 'Space Rangers' could not give me what I expected from the continuation. But I got a dose of pleasure and nostalgia.
Continuing the fight against dominators
The 'Space Rangers' series of games is difficult to categorize into any one genre. This is a turn-based strategy game with RPG and text quest elements. Domestic developers have created an amazing world of space with various races, galaxies and interesting tasks. And the mobile sequel has taken over a lot of that.
In Space Rangers: Legacy, it all starts with choosing a character's race – each has its own advantages. At this point, you can immediately notice that the RPG component has been greatly simplified, at the beginning of the game you do not need to distribute points among all the characteristics of the hero, because the developers did it for you. After choosing a character, a small training will take place, in which they introduce the main mechanics of the game, I will not focus on this.
The player is immediately introduced to the plot, if you can call it that. In parallel with the training, they briefly talk about the dominators – robots gradually conquering all galaxies. The player gets the role of the main fighter against them. The second part of 'Space Rangers' paid more attention to the plot.
After training, the player finds himself in his home galaxy, the Sun, and a huge space map is opened to him, divided into dozens of sectors. The main task of the game is to open all sectors and destroy the source of distribution of dominators. Although the player can turn from a ranger into a pirate and engage in robberies with other pirates. A little variability in this regard remained.
To complete the main mission, you need to travel across galaxies, upgrade your weapons, buy improved ships and improve your combat skills. The main source of profit is completing quests. In the previous part, this was the most interesting: each assignment had a detailed description, often composed with humor. Continuation in this regard is much simpler, all quests boil down to the fact that you need to kill someone or transport a cargo to another planet. The trademark humor remained in the description, but it became much more boring to complete the tasks.
But the combat system remained the same. On the ship, you can install several guns of different types and shoot from all at once at one enemy, or work more tactfully if several opponents attack at once. When traveling between galaxies, you need to constantly refuel the fuel tank, now you just need to fly to any planet or station and it will replenish automatically, and the ship is still being repaired manually.
In general, a lot has been simplified in the game. Now you don't need to worry about your reputation so much, you can destroy warriors, rangers and transport ships, and then just pay a ransom or be arrested. But there is no cool text quest in the prison from the previous part, in which you could put money on cockroach races, pump muscles and dig a tunnel to escape with an ordinary spoon. Now the prison implies the fulfillment of the task – to destroy several dominators. During the time of imprisonment, the player cannot buy new equipment and complete other quests.
Externally, the new part hardly differs from the previous ones, if you do not take into account the interface adapted for touch control. Transferred old models of ships, characters and planets. And for the music from the second part, I want to express special thanks to the developers.
The game 'Space Rangers: Legacy' is distributed free of charge, but there is a donation. I must say right away that in-app purchases were added here only symbolically, enemies do not become more difficult over time, and you can buy improved weapons for the ship with the money you earn from quests. In this regard, the game will quickly get bored, there are no difficulties with killing pirates, and money is earned easily.
It may seem that I am only scolding the game, but I just named those moments that were noticeably simplified compared to the previous part. Perhaps a lot of this was done to please the mobile format. For example, manual refueling was removed quite rightly. Although the game lacks a global search engine that could be used to find the right part for a ship or character to destroy. Judging by the comments in the official game group on VKontakte, the developers are looking for a way to implement global search.
I am glad that the new 'Space Rangers' have retained the spirit of the previous parts, the game is interesting to travel and fight with dominators and pirates, although it quickly gets boring. At the same time, the game has mostly good reviews on Google Play and a rating of 4.8. It can be seen that the developers do not have enough money or energy for all plans for the development of the game.
In general, I recommend at least trying out the new 'Space Rangers', especially if you've played the previous games. It is simpler, many elements are missing, but this is a good option to remember the past – the game is perfectly ported for smartphones. Hopefully, in the future, developers will have the opportunity to develop the game into something more ambitious.
