Remember Android – smartphones HTC Evo 3D and LG Optimus 3D? If not, then we remind you that in 2011 they became the first two smartphones with 3D screens, but the interest of buyers was insufficient for a real 3D revolution to take place on the smartphone market. This is why talk of 3D smartphones dwindled, even though the Evo 3D and Optimus 3D had followers.
However, while these devices were the first 3D smartphones available worldwide, they were not the first of their rare species at all. The first phone capable of displaying 3D images appeared already in November 2002, and it was the Sharp mova SH251iS . It was intended only for Japan and was released for the Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo, so it is clear that few people have heard of it at all.
The phone's 2.2-inch 65K color display used parallax barrier technology to create a 3D effect – the same technology found in Evo 3D and Optimus 3D a decade later. The user was able to perceive the depth of the image without having to wear stupid glasses and did not particularly suffer from color distortion. The 0.3MP camera couldn't take 3D shots, but the editing app allowed you to turn ordinary shots into 3D. Of course, it was possible to get 3D content online.
In 2007, another 3D phone appeared, the Samsung SCH-B710 . Unlike the Sharp phone, it already knew how to take 3D pictures. This was possible thanks to the well-positioned 1.3MP cameras. The device had a 2.2-inch display with a resolution of 240×360 pixels and used the same parallax barrier technology mentioned above.
Alas, such devices never became fashionable, and it seems that currently no company is eager to give them a second chance. Maybe this is due to the insufficient level of development of technology, or maybe most buyers perceive it as a useless curiosity. What do you think of 3D smartphones? Is there a place for them in the near future?
