“What is this?” – this was the first reaction to the advanced notification control settings found in the depths Android N. This section appeared along with the first OS version Android N for developers. The settings are hidden under the 'System UI Tuner' menu item and allow you to prioritize the notification of each app installed on your smartphone.
This is an experimental feature that is certainly useful and has a lot of potential, but at the moment it is unnecessarily overcomplicated. Advanced notification control allows you to choose between six different priority levels. Here's what they give:
- Level 5 – Full screen interruption is allowed and notifications always pop up at the top of the screen. The notification appears at the top of the list of notifications
- Level 4 – Full screen interruption is prohibited, but notifications appear at the top of the screen
- Level 3 – Disable full screen interruption, toast notifications are not supported
- Level 2 – Full screen interruption is prohibited, pop-up notifications are not supported, audible and vibration alerts are disabled. My phone does not sound or vibrate when I receive a notification
- Level 1 – No interruption of full screen mode, pop-up notifications, sound notifications and vibration are prohibited. Notifications are not displayed on the lock screen or status bar. App notifications will appear at the bottom of the notification list
- Level 0 – All app notifications are blocked
Each update of the preliminary version of the OS Android N brings major changes for developers, so it is not yet safe to say that the system of advanced notification settings will be in the final version. However, this functionality can only be welcomed, since it will give the user another level of freedom in control over applications. It would also be a great help for Do Not Disturb, allowing you to decide which apps to receive or not receive notifications from.
This is what the advanced notification settings look like at the moment.
Step 1
First you need to select 'System UI Tuner'. Here's how to find this menu item. Turn it on if it hasn't been activated before.

Within the item, select the 'Other' section at the very end of the list.

In the next menu item, go to the Power notification controls section.

Turn on the mode by toggling the slider.

We finished with the menu, now you need to go to the Notifications section, where you need to click on the shortcut in the sub-item.

You can now apply advanced settings to any selected application.

We took Chrome as an example. You see a slider that allows you to switch between priority levels. However, you cannot use it right away, since the automatic mode is disabled by default. To enable manual settings, click the letter 'A' on the left.
