Boletus vs Google

It's autumn and every weekend crowds of people go to the forest to pick mushrooms. The competition is growing, which means we need to optimize the process of searching for mushrooms. Let's see what we can do with the help of Google.

Experienced mushroom pickers say that even in a lean year, you can pick up a basket of mushrooms if you know the places. And this is indeed so, myceliums can only increase or decrease their area, but not change their habitat. Therefore, the only problem that a mushroom picker may have is the inability to remember the place where the forest delighted him with its generous gifts.

Nowadays, every Android smartphone has a camera, GPS-GNSS and Google apps. But there is often no free memory, so we will use this built-in kit. There are two ways to create a personal and secret mushroom map:

  • The method is simple, next to each mushroom we make a mark on the map and add it to a new list, which we call 'mushrooms'.
  • The second method is more interesting, because it allows you to accumulate more complete information and make a sample at home, in a comfortable environment.

First of all, you need to find the mushroom. We take our smartphone out of our pocket and check if geotags are enabled in the camera settings. We used a standard Sony camera, in your particular case this setting may be called differently:

We take a photo of our mushroom, then put it in a basket and move on. When the 'quiet hunt' is over and we are at home, you can safely go through the photos and choose those that deserve attention. Now launch the Google Photos app and find them there. Open the photo of the mushroom and click on the (i) icon at the bottom of the image. Among other information, a stylized image of a map with a geotag on it will open, click on the label and we are offered to choose an application for this kind of action:

We select Google maps and now our label is open in real maps. It remains only to save it and add it to the list, which can be called 'mushrooms'. That's all. In the end, we will have a map, all studded with labels of mushroom places. Next year, I plan to check the mycologists' claims about myceliums and go through the route again. The best part is that if you open access to the list of tags by link, then you can share it with friends and family. Agree, it is not at all necessary to go through the mushroom route yourself, if you can send a friend along it.

Alas, even the advanced Google still cannot boast of a convenient interface for building a route using photos, you have to spend some time understanding the process. But in the indicated ways, you can build a route and send a person anywhere. And in this regard, I have a question, friends, what alternative application can you recommend? So that you can build a route using coordinates obtained from photos, send it to friends and edit it within wide limits? Where else in the national economy can you use the ability to send a list of tags?
