Chinese Android: 200+ app stores and no downloads from Google Play

If we say that Android is popular in China, in a global sense, this will not even be enough. About 75% of Chinese smartphone owners use devices on Android, it costs something. Unfortunately for Google, the company benefits little from such an overwhelming popularity of the 'robot' in the Middle Kingdom. While Google Play is just trying to find solid ground in China, third-party app stores are completely nullifying these efforts. Currently, over 200 different app stores are competing for user attention.

Among the hundreds of stores for Android, there are three Chinese app stores: 360 Mobile Assistant, Myapp and Baidu Mobile Assistant. The brainchild of Quihoo Software, 360 MA is used by at least 400 million users. Created by Tencent, the developer of the popular messenger WeChat, Myapp has 110 million downloads per day. Finally, Baidu, created by the country's largest search engine, posted two of the ten most downloaded apps in 2014.

While Google is planning ways to roll out its services in this fast-growing region, fighting government restrictions, the App Store from Apple is still the only way to legally buy apps and games for iOS for Chinese users. Taking into account the strict control Apple over the operating system iPhone and the pedantic policy of the App Store, creating alternative stores is difficult (except for Cydia, which is limited to jailbroken devices), and making a profit for Apple is not a problem. Widespread piracy aside, 65% of apps are downloaded directly from the App Store, making China the main market for apps and games for iOS. China is the second country in the world in terms of the number of downloads of games and applications for iOS, it is second only to the United States, and at the same time it is in third place in terms of profitability from applications under iOS.

And as a cherry on the cake and in connection with the games. This is a very hot category of apps with a lot of downloads. Chinese gamers install a new game every three days on average, so they don't bother with the endless Clash Of Titans or Candy Crush, but are actively looking for new titles. Most games are downloaded on the weekend, and the least – for some reason, on Tuesday. Maybe Tuesday is for the Chinese a traditional Day of Rest for gamers before returning to the battle arenas? Who knows…
