Friday column No. 144. How much are you willing to pay for a gadget?

I often see indignation in the comments: 'I'm not ready to pay so much for a smartphone / tablet / headphones / covers.' In today's column, I propose to discuss how much you are willing to give for this or that gadget / accessory.

Hello everyone! To begin with, I would like to apologize for the delayed column, this is due to the fact that due to the turmoil with the exhibition I simply did not have time to finish it. However, I hope that you will find time to read it on Saturday too.

Today I would like to discuss with you a topic that commentators often raise, namely the so-called 'decent' price. How much are you willing to pay for a particular device? Why exactly this price? At the same time, pay attention to the answers of other readers to compare them with your own. And, of course, I will share my price frames as well. Let's start with them.

Smartphone. Before working at Mobile-Review, I was almost addicted to gadgets, I constantly wanted to buy something new, read about something new, etc. Fortunately, after a couple of years of work, I more or less calmed down: the interest remained, but the feverish desire to constantly buy something disappeared, and this is good. I am writing about this so that you understand how my words below will be justified. My smartphone frames are usually limited not by price, but by a sufficient minimum of characteristics: HD-resolution, oleophobic coating, fast work and more or less normal dimensions. Now a large number of gadgets are suitable for such parameters, and within 10-13 thousand rubles, you can purchase any of them. Recently, for example, I used the Meizu M3s Mini and felt great with it after the iPhone.

On the other hand, if you imagine a situation that I changed my field of activity and was left without a smartphone, then most likely I would have taken the last iPhone with the expectation not to update in the next two or three years. The choice of iPhone is not accidental, I just got used to iOS, but in no case am I claiming that Android is worse. As a result, with a limit on money, I would be guided by my minimum in terms of characteristics, under normal circumstances I would take an iPhone, if the budget were up to 30 thousand, I would have stopped at something from Nexus.

The tablet. Having tested many tablets, I realized that my key scenario is watching videos and reading, so I would be looking for something with a good screen and a price of up to 15-20 thousand rubles. Or I wouldn't buy at all.

Headphones. I love music, but I am a music lover, not an audiophile, it is important for me to listen to a song or composition, and not how well the headphones pull it out. So now I go with cheap ones Xiaomi for 200 rubles. For headphones with a good fit and a difference in sound quality that even I can hear, I'm ready to pay up to 5,000 rubles.

Column. I love the wireless speaker market, but in my use cases, these speakers may only come in handy when traveling or while cooking in the kitchen. Therefore, I would be sorry to give more than 5,000 rubles for such devices. Except when the sound quality would hit me very hard.

Cover. In ordinary cases, I order something inexpensive from China and I don't really worry, but if we are talking about a quality item like a Bellroy case, then I am ready to raise the bar to the same 3,000-5,000 rubles.

Conclusion

As you can see, within my framework, there are two use cases – buy on demand or buy for the soul. In the first case, it is just a technical need, in the second – a desire to please yourself and get emotional pleasure from the thing. What about you, dear readers? Tell us about your price limits and situations when you exceeded them. At the same time, it would be interesting to read about what you use yourself within the framework of your limitations.
