Friday column number 106. Your first Android – smartphone

On September 23, the operating system Android celebrated its 7th anniversary, in this regard, I propose to recall your very first smartphone on this OS, but I will tell you about mine.

It seems that until recently Android was a newcomer to operating systems, he had a bunch of 'childhood sores', ranging from slowdowns to terrible battery life. At that time, the owners iPhone liked to joke with users Android – smartphones, they say, you can't get away from charging even for a couple of hours.

But even in those days it was already clear that the system had great potential and it would occupy the vacant niche Windows Mobile. At that time I walked with a simple Nokia slider and had long wanted to buy myself a new smartphone, but the poor student had no extra money. And after a couple of part-time jobs and postponed savings, I managed to save 20,000 rubles. For this money, you could buy a 'gray' HTC Desire HD or Samsung Galaxy S. I had to choose between the devices for a very long time: on the one hand, the advantages of the Galaxy S were a bright display and support for many video formats, and on the other, Desire HD had a pre-installed HTC Sense and a large screen diagonal, in the end I preferred it and became a fan of the brand HTC for quite a long time.

In the first week of use, I immediately noticed a problem with the back cover, the seller in the store closed it incorrectly when installing the battery, and I saw this already at home. It is clear that it was useless to contact a gray seller to replace the cover, and the warranty HTC did not apply to my device. Fortunately, the problem was solved with the help of eBay, where for 500 rubles they brought me the same cover, but a new one.

You know, for me Android 2.1 was not some kind of scary and ugly, because HTC made every effort to make HTC Sense look nice and neat. This shell was far ahead of its time, because there was already an excellent keyboard, and a high-quality dialer, and a good browser, and, of course, a beautiful clock widget with weather. I remember it even had its own Twitter client, Peep.

The main problem of the device was, of course, the battery life, its charge was only enough for half a day. This did not bother me much, because at the institute I could always recharge from a netbook, but this fact cannot be ignored.

I really liked the large display, I was just delighted with it, after all, HTC always took a responsible approach to the choice of displays, which is great. I remember that there was no MX Player at that time, so I used MVideoPlayer, it was able to play video with the codecs supported by the device, but it also loaded subtitles. I enjoyed watching a lot of anime on my way to college and back.

One little thing bothered me: I really wanted the battery charge to be displayed with percentages, and I didn't like the options with the tray icon, they looked too artisanal. It was then that my acquaintance with Root, S-OFF and other interesting things began.

After the battery icon, custom firmwares went, and here HTC Sensation came out, I tried several times to 'sit' on the firmware ported from it, but they could not optimize the contacts widget in any way, in it the photos of the cards were flattened , so I returned to the Android Revolution HD firmware over and over again.

After a while, I tried Go Launcher, and later I upgraded the device to MIUI. The firmware from the Chinese, of course, was very pleasing, it worked faster than Sense, and was more functional, so I constantly jumped to it, then to ARHD.

A year later I upgraded to HTC Desire S, which was both more convenient and better in size, and worked longer, and had a slightly better display, in general, turned out to be an extremely successful model. After that, I switched to Galaxy S2, the first used device I bought, and it was on it MIUI that it was very appropriate. And then there was the first Galaxy Note, and I still remember the delight of using that device. And then constant testing began, and there was almost no time for their devices (although they were – Galaxy S3, Galaxy Nexus, Meizu MX2 and MX3, etc.)
