Friday column number 113. The best innovations in Android since 4.0

I remember a conversation with Roman Belykh, when he noted that, in fact, since the time of Android 4.0 there have been not so many significant changes (for the average consumer). I partially agree with Roma, however, after thinking a little, I realized that I can highlight a number of important innovations that had a positive effect on the overall impression of the OS.

Sync contact photos

Now, probably, no one will even remember about this sore subject, but a couple of years ago there were many articles on the network on how to save high-quality photos of contacts. What people have just come up with: storing the phone book in the memory of a smartphone, and storing individual contacts with photos with their subsequent merging, and much more.

And finally in Android 4.1 this problem was solved. Rather, how it was resolved: the photos of selected contacts initially began to pull up in good quality, but you have to tinker with the rest. If you receive a call from a conditional Masha who is not in your favorites, then in order for her photo to be in good quality, you need to open her contact card and wait 2-4 seconds, after this time the photo will be updated to a high-quality version.

Work speed

As I remember now Android 4.1 and the emergence of Project Butter, which significantly speeds up your smartphone. Even the fast Nexus got even faster after the update. After Android 4.1, there were significantly less slowdowns in devices, however, this did not help TouchWiz.

The second important improvement in terms of speed of work was the replacement of Dalvik with ART in Android 4.4. I remember rave reviews from early adopters to update their Nexus or any other smartphones. The devices seemed to get a second life.

Autonomous work

It's funny to remember, but once the owners iPhone could calmly mock the operating time of most Android smartphones and, in general, were not far from the truth. However, time passes, and now I can already remember iPhone 5s, which by the middle of the day I have to charge from an external battery. If my memory serves me, Google did not have a big update dedicated to the operating time (other than what was shown in Android 6.0), it is more like a sequential optimization, when the device works a little more with each new version longer.

Material Design

I actually like all designs used in Android since 4.0 and Material Design is no exception. Of course, all this is beautiful, concise and great, but I would very much like to see third-party developers forcibly transferred to the current guidelines.

Backup

To be honest, at the moment I'm not very happy with this feature and don't quite understand how it works. When setting up a new smartphone, you can choose the version of the backup made on one of the previous models, however, due to the large number of third-party skins, you can restore applications, but not the contents of the desktop (except for those users who have Google Nexus). I would like a more detailed backup setup, as it is done in the same Titanium Backup.

Conclusion

Of course, these are not all important innovations since Android 4.0, I have highlighted only what I consider most relevant specifically for myself. At the same time, it would be interesting to look at your top 5 innovations, dear readers, please share your thoughts in the comments to the article.
