Friday column number 115. From favorites to likes

When Twitter shifted from niche favorites to more popular likes, I didn't share the enthusiasm and approval. In today's column I would like to tell you why.

I don't know if you remember or not, but when likes changed favorites on Twitter, most microbloggers wrote about the logical transition from favorites to like posts. Most of all, I was struck by the statement about the logic of such a transition, because favorites and like are not the same thing at all. Let's remember how they differ.

Usually, entries that interest the user in something are added to favorites. Most often, such entries are postponed for later, a kind of 'Read it Later' within the framework of Twitter. For example, I know that Eldar Murtazin sometimes marks topics in the 'favorites' for one of the future articles, although not all of the marked falls into the same 'Spillikins' or 'Sofa Analytics'.

I use favorites as a warehouse for the information I need. Unfortunately, at the moment, this warehouse is not sorted by topic, but most often there are either some relevant comics, or a recommendation to watch this or that series / anime. I also add interesting articles and announcements to favorites.

Now let's talk about likes. Like just shows the user's approval of this entry. He notes that he liked the recording, and that's it. However, not everything that we liked will be useful to us in the future, the list of everything that you have noted as liked is unlikely to be useful to you. The endorsement is not equal to the fact that you find this information useful!

I was sincerely surprised by this decision of Twitter. Nothing prevented you from adding likes as a separate option and not touching your favorites. In my opinion, the transition from favorites to likes is associated with the subsequent simplification of Twitter for new users. A kind of standardization so that everything is the same on all social networks: like – you like the post, repost – you want to share with friends. However, such a simplification in this particular case does not seem correct to me.

P.S. I decided to postpone the theme with selected playlists from Google Music to the next week.
