Friday column number 157. About printing speed

Recently I was visiting a good friend and noticed that he responded to e-mail very quickly. According to my estimates, he typed one and a half times faster than me. Just yesterday he sent the test results to www.skoropisanie.ru, the result was 613 characters per minute.

For fun I also went to this site and passed their test. As I thought, my results were much more modest – 384 characters per minute, and even four mistakes. However, it is understandable, I have not learned to type anywhere, I don’t use ten-finger input, and I don’t particularly chase this parameter. Every time I visit this or that exhibition and look after colleagues from other publications, I note that many of them print faster than me.

And during these reflections, a memory from the distant past came to my mind. They bought me the first computer, of course, I did not understand anything about it, and the master who set it up was typing something very quickly on it. I just marveled at how fast he typed. Now I understand that there was nothing unusual there, but 13 years ago I was very impressed.

Surprisingly, now the skill of fast typing in isolation from other abilities does not play any role. Yes, secretaries need to be able to type documents quickly, but they also have many other responsibilities. Now, in the era of digital communication, typing can be equated with the ability to speak: someone does it quickly, someone does it slowly, but almost everyone is fluent in keyboard input to some extent.

By the way, an interesting observation. I know that the younger generation is not very fond of just reading text, instead they prefer visual information, which is why all kinds of instructions on YouTube are so popular.

It's amazing how quickly the world has transformed, 15-20 years ago only people from the specialized world could boast of fast printing, and now even an ordinary user is fluent in this skill. On the other hand, computers have now become more widespread and accessible.

At the end of the column I wanted to ask you, how fast are you typing? Did you specifically learn ten-finger input or do you type the old-fashioned way, intuitively?
