OnePlus 5 presentation

Today, the company, which has become famous as the manufacturer of the original killer of flagships OnePlus One, held a long-awaited presentation at which it presented its next brainchild – OnePlus5.

The previous model was called OnePlus 3T. Don't be surprised at the leap in model numbering. In China, the number 4 is considered unlucky, and the Chinese take superstitions and numerology very seriously and prefer not to tempt fate once again. This is why number 4 was skipped.

Almost all the characteristics of the device were known long before the presentation, since the insiders did not sleep and regularly supplied us with portions of information about the upcoming new product. Almost everything that was known was confirmed.

OnePlus5 received the following specifications:

The high bar set by previous generations of the company's devices meant the release of an uncompromising smartphone with maximum performance and a relatively reasonable price. The new generation of OnePlus has left more questions than answers.

The smartphone received an OpticAmoled 5.5-inch display. Apparently, OnePlus decided not to enter the race to minimize bezels and bending displays, so they equipped the smartphone with a display with impressive bezels by today's standards. And while it seems like an edge-to-edge screen, it isn't. There are frames and they are noticeable. The proportions also remained the traditional 16: 9, instead of the now fashionable 18/9.

As for the resolution, it's good old 19201080. No '2K' or other frills. However, despite this, it was not without improvements – the OnePlus 5 screen supports the DCI-P3 color gamut standard, which is used in digital theaters.

The OnePlus5 is available in two main colors – Midnight Black / Slate Gray (Midnight Black / Slate Gray). Where are the bright, light colors? They are not.

Emphasis is placed on the design of the device. Textured anodized aluminum body.

The smartphone turned out to be quite thin. The so-called concept of the horizon line is highlighted separately.

On the side edge there is a separate key for switching the device to silent mode, you know how anyone has it.

Dual slot for nanoSIM cards. There is no memory card support. Sorry.

A fingerprint scanner of a familiar shape under the display. A very high reading speed is declared – 0.2 sec. The main thing is that the accuracy does not fail.

The audio jack 3.5 has not gone anywhere either, although at the presentation the speaker played a prank on the audience, saying that in the age of wireless technologies they decided not to install a headphone jack.

A lot of attention is paid to the main camera.

OnePlus calls it the best camera. The maximum resolution among dual cameras is emphasized separately. The emphasis is on shooting in low light conditions and the DSLR system.

With such small pixel sizes (1.12 µm for wide-angle and 1 µm for telephoto), which capture less light, I want to test the statement about super-quality shooting in practice. They also forgot to put optical stabilization in the camera. It's only electronic.

The most powerful solution for today is responsible for the device performance – Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 paired with the Adreno 540 graphics accelerator.

The smartphone comes in two configurations – 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, or 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory.

According to the company, the use of the most advanced hardware can improve the performance and energy efficiency of the smartphone.

And the use of advanced technologies for the production of memory – to increase the speed of data exchange.

The battery capacity is 3300 mAh. It supports fast charging, which is more efficient than the Samsung Galaxy S8, at least according to OnePlus.

The smartphone is powered by Oxygen OS (Android Nougat).

Among the features emphasized is the reading mode with automatic white balance, which changes depending on the ambient light.

The two versions will cost $ 479 and $ 539 respectively, making the OnePlus 5 the company's most expensive device. This was to be expected. however, fans of the brand hoped to the last for a more democratic price tag. Considering that this is the price from the manufacturer, one should not forget about the appetites of dealers. This will be especially true in the first couple of months of sales.

Conclusion

The smartphone is full of compromises.

A body similar to the iPhone 7 Plus, the most powerful Snapdragon processor and up to 8 GB of RAM, a dual camera without optical stabilization that can hardly beat the current leaders of mobile photography, an adaptive white balance reading mode on a modest FullHD- display resolution? albeit made using OpticAmoled technology, and … that's it? And that's all. The smartphone that was supposed to be, if not a trendsetter, but a shaker of fundamentals, turned out to be just an expensive cosmetic enhancement to the previous OnePlus 3T.

Without a price cut, the OnePlus 5 is unlikely to show any records or even significant sales figures.
