The Galaxy Note series smartphones are not just big smartphones. They're the best of the best Samsung has to offer, and it's always a combination of the very top hardware and software the company has. The Galaxy Note 9 seems to be no exception. The Note line is the kind of Galaxy device that will suit people who want everything at once, and for many, the S Pen stylus is the most important part of this 'all'.
Let's forget this fundamentally flawed thought that 'no one needs a stylus'. A lot of people would like to get something like a pen for writing in their devices, which is always with them. And so companies like Microsoft, Apple and Google have been offering their own pen-entry devices ever since the Note was born. You can take notes on the run, you can use the stylus to take notes in presentations, or you can just sketch if you draw or like to sketch in the margin. For all this, the stylus is great and works well.
Here's the secret to success: works well. If you've never used the S Pen before, you might think it's like using a third-party stylus purchased separately, but that would be a mistake. The S Pen works very smoothly, and while it doesn't feel the same as drawing or painting on paper, it does the same. And the reason for this is the full integration of the stylus into the Galaxy Note, when it is not just an additional connected device., /
The regular stylus that you purchase separately is a capacitive input device. The screen in your phone is made of an insulating material (usually glass), which also serves as a solid outer surface. The insulating layer is covered with a transparent layer of electrically conductive material. Your finger, like a 'regular' stylus, is also electrically conductive, and when you touch the screen, its electrostatic field changes. Your phone's processor and operating system receive this data and process it like taps, long presses, pinches, and anything else you do with your fingers or stylus.
The S Pen is an inductive stylus. The Note smartphone display has what is called an active digitizer under the glass. When the S Pen approaches the screen, the active digitizer's magnetic field generates a current that powers its internal circuitry. Energy is transferred in this case as between the wireless charging mat and the phone that supports it, only its amount is not so great.
The S Pen is an induction device that requires special hardware in the Note screen.
When the S Pen is activated, the weak current inside it does most of the work when drawing and writing. And the job of a digitizer comes down to one thing: tracking the movement of the stylus tip. The S Pen doesn't need to touch the screen for this to happen, which is important because when you touch, it activates your writing or drawing software. The screen knows where the stylus is touching it and tracks its movements, and the S Pen itself 'tells' the program that it is drawing a line. The program draws a line on your screen, and you see what you draw or write as it happens.
This makes the result more accurate than what can be obtained with any capacitive stylus. This is why the S Pen won't work like a stylus with any other phone – its screen isn't electrically conductive. And for the same reason, the S Pen, as well as the Apple Pen, Pixel Pen or Surface Pen, perform so much better than 'regular' styluses.
The Note 9 adds new functionality for the S Pen related to Bluetooth connectivity. You can use the button to take a photo or a series of slides and generally do whatever an app developer can think of. But that doesn't make a difference or affect how the S Pen draws on the screen, it just improves the experience.
The capacitive stylus works with any touchscreen and doesn't work very well.
A stylus like this one with Amazon can also be useful. For example, for rough sketches or for selecting an area of text on a small screen phone. And, as stated, the best thing about these styli is that they work on any touchscreen – even the Galaxy Note screen.
But if you need to draw with precision or write a lot, there is nothing like a good inductive stylus like the Galaxy Note series. Capacitive styluses can be found that connect at Bluetooth and track movements like the S Pen (called active styluses and are fully supported in Android), but they will never be nearly as accurate . No options.
There are many reasons to buy a Galaxy Note, but if stylus experience is important to you, this is the only device that offers a full-fledged option, as Samsung has made the S Pen part of the smartphone – at the hardware and software level.
