Smartphones 2016; technologies, solutions

What technologies in smartphones will be popular in the new year?

In 2015, the smartphone market was busy with a race of resolutions and screen diagonals, each manufacturer tried to make sure 2560 × 1440 and add another half or even an inch to the rather big five-inch smartphones. They distinguished themselves at Sony, presenting a device with 4k resolution, though not used in all applications and not always. From year to year in this very competitive market, smartphones have new chips and features, some of them remain, others turn out to be of no interest to anyone and die off by themselves. In this small note, I want to talk with you about what will be popular in the smartphone market in the new 2016.

USB Type-C

One can argue about whether the new Type-C connector is more convenient or inconvenient than the usual microUSB, but judging by some smartphones presented in the fall of 2015, it remains to confidently assert that next year USB Type-C will 'go to the masses'. Of the advantages, the new connector has symmetry and the ability to stick the charger plug into the smartphone body either side. And there is an equally obvious drawback – the connector is just starting to be built in and used in smartphones, so in 2016 we will have a leapfrog: some devices will still have microUSB, and the other will have USB Type-C. You will need to have several cables with you for a while. An unobvious drawback of Type-C is the size of the connector. Oddly enough, but it is larger than the 'old man' microUSB.

Super AMOLED screens

Like it or not like the technology AMOLED – it is the future in compact electronics. In 2015, some companies have already switched to Super AMOLED displays from Samsung, leaving behind their experience with IPS-matrices. Of course, we will never know all the reasons for switching from one type of screen to another, but one is obvious – the operating time of smartphones. Sadly enough to admit it, IPS screens for smartphones have come to a standstill in their development and some companies, having switched to Super AMOLED, get more pleasant data on the autonomy of devices (Meizu Pro 5) or they do not lose in operating time, while having batteries of less capacity than usual (HTC One A9). So in 2016 we will have a lot of smartphones based on Super AMOLED screens and this is probably for the best. This dynamic will force Samsung to develop and improve technology even faster.

The fingerprint scanner

Until recently, the fingerprint scanner remained the prerogative of top-level devices, then Huawei added this thing to Honor 7 and several more mid-range devices with a scanner appeared and, finally, towards the end of the year Meizu and Xiaomi showed the Metal M1 and Redmi Note 3, respectively, budget smartphones with a fingerprint scanner. In the new year, one should expect literally waves of cheap Chinese smartphones (UMI, Zopo, and so on) with a built-in scanner, as well as an increase in the number of models from major brands that use this 'chip'. In my opinion, the spread of the fingerprint scanner in smartphones is a blessing, although I personally don't use it and turned it off on Meizu MX4 Pro, on Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and PEC One A9, which I currently use. And the presence of a scanner is good because most manufacturers build it into their devices very carefully and correctly, it does not interfere even if you do not need it, and for many, its presence certainly adds to the convenience of working with a smartphone.
