In the past years, and to some extent even now, Android – smartphones of the Sony Xperia Z line have been the object of dreams of gadget lovers. And if you are looking for a high-end device, the Sony label on the case is worthy of a guarantee.
However, this does not negate the fact that at some points the Japanese giant slows down. Updates are regular but gradual, and not many differences can be seen between the new models and their predecessors.
If we were asked what we want to see in 2016, we would say this.
1. We want to see the world's best smartphone camera
Of course, marketing needs are forcing Sony to claim their smartphone cameras are the best in the world. However, we know that they are good, but not enough to be the best. Samsung and LG can challenge the company's primacy from this point of view, as can iPhone 6s.
The latest smartphone in the Xperia line, the Z5, has a very good camera. The footage that the 23MP EXMOR RS sensor can capture looks great both at full resolution and when oversampled at 8MP. But call them the best in the world? .. The Xperia Z5 does not even have optical image stabilization, which is found in many other devices and with the worst cameras.
Sony has been dragging on their cameras for too long, so why should we wait even longer? It is this company that creates some of the world's best mirrorless cameras. She sells her sensors to other companies. She has a successful camera division. So why doesn't Sony come up with something that would blow our minds?
2. We want more accessibility
Sony has phones for different budgets, that's a fact. However, a certain overvaluation of the company's top-end devices is just as obvious. With Samsung, this number is passing, but only because of the staggering scale of the presence in the world of smartphones. No one will refuse to buy a Galaxy S or Galaxy Note because they cost the same or more.
If you're looking for a smartphone from Sony now, we'd recommend the Xperia Z5 Compact. It is the smallest and most affordable, however it is not cheap either. The price goes down as the phones get older, but if you can buy the LG G4 for significantly less than any Xperia Z5, why not do it? And it won't be some kind of ancient telephone.
Obviously Sony wants to make money, but they are starting to get out of the market. And there is nothing in their phones that would be worth overpaying compared to the competition.
3. We want to see the company again in the field of creating smart watches
Sony has been at the forefront of smartwatches since before Android Wear was anything but. Of course, the early experiences were far from ideal, and the latest Japanese effort in this area, the Smartwatch 3, caused very polarizing reactions. Some admired the watch, others hated it. However, it was a Android Wear device, and it offered some features that rival watches on the Google platform did not have when it was introduced.
However, apart from a small update in the form of a metal strap, Sony has been quiet in this area. Smartwatch 3 thundered at IFA 2014, but in more than a year after that, the situation has changed. And the only way to expand the ecosystem is to start creating different clocks.
Sony has proven they can do it, so let it happen again.
4. We want faster updates
Sony is not the worst example in terms of updates, but there is room for improvement. Currently Android 6.0 Marshmallow for Sony is in testing, no time frame has been set for updating existing phones. We also don't know anything about the monthly security updates.
And what's the matter? Sony's approach to Android is not particularly willing to saw through everything and everyone. Not a bare OS, but most of the changes are about visual details, and the interface and user experience are close to stock. Therefore, there is no particular reason to delay the update so much. It does not seem that Sony devices have a full-fledged shell like Samsung Touchwiz or software LG, but they lag behind these companies in updates.
Sony is open to discussions about which devices will get updates, but they are slow when it comes down to it.
5. We want something of our own
A traditional point for you, dear readers. It's time to share in the comments what you expect from Sony in 2016.
