Introduction

The Angry Birds brand has expanded far beyond the boundaries of the gaming industry with an upcoming feature film, animated series, theme parks, toys, sodas and a host of other fan products. Rovio has made a cult of Angry Birds. Suffice it to mention that the President of Russia, at that time, Dmitry Medvedev, thanked the developers for creating the game: “Now Russian officials have at least one very important job at work.”

Today in the Angry Birds universe, there are about 20 games for a variety of platforms. Most of them are add-ons or sequels to the first 'classic' game, Angry Birds. But there were also offshoots in the lineup: racing – Angry Birds Go, puzzle – Bad Piggies, RPG – Angry Birds Epic and many others.

Today I want to talk about a new game in the series – Angry Birds Action, which can also be considered an offshoot of the main line, but in many ways it still looks like a 'classic'.

Gameplay

Angry Birds Anction departs from the canons of the first game, where birds were sent to 'flight' using a slingshot, and the playing field was two-dimensional (side view). In the new version, the birds became three-dimensional, but this is not the first experience of developers in 3D graphics – the same Angry Birds Go races were also three-dimensional. I can describe the gameplay of the new game as a cross between mobile billiards and pinball.

A bird appears at the starting location, the player sets the direction – where it will run. When it hits any surface, the bird 'ricochets' like a pinball ball. Many objects on the map are destroyed, and some remain in place. The goal of the game changes from level to level – somewhere you need to collect all the eggs, detonate all the bombs on the map, or return the little chicks to the nest.

As before, there are several types of birds in the game. In this case, there are three of them – red, black and yellow. The red bird does not have any unique abilities. The black bird explodes on its first impact, destroying objects within the radius of the explosion. The yellow bird has a very high speed and ricochets from surfaces better than others. Also, the game has a large number of bonuses that somehow facilitate the passage of levels.

Graphic arts

Rovio's games have always looked good and tasteful, and Angry Birds Action is no exception. Menus, levels, objects, characters – everything is done very nicely.

Shareware

The freemium distribution model and all its elements in the form of chests, in-game currency, bonuses, accelerations and other things have not gone anywhere. But the main omission of the developer is the introduction of 'energy'. This is a resource that is spent on completing one level, the maximum amount of energy is 3 units.

To restore one unit, you need to wait 20 minutes or pay a certain amount of in-game currency – gems.

What's wrong with the game

In this part of the article I will tell you why the game came out not entirely successful. It's not even all about the boring shareware distribution model – many have long come to terms with this.

The problem of the game is precisely in the concept of gameplay. In many ways, the behavior of birds is very difficult to predict, if in the 'classic' Angry Birds it was necessary to find weak points in the design, then here you can only choose the direction where the bird will run, and hope that you are at least a little closer to the goal. Despite the unpredictability of the gameplay, Angry Birds Action is pretty easy – there are very few levels where you can't win the first time. Because of these shortcomings, the game gets boring very quickly, it is very monotonous. She definitely lacks some kind of zest that would catch the player. In the early parts of Angry Birds, it was.

Outcome

One gets the impression that Rovio just needed to release a product urgently to increase interest in the full-length Angry Birds Movie. It is also possible that they ran out of ideas for new games, while the branch from the main line of Bad Piggies turned out to be quite successful, although there was a completely new gameplay for the series.

In any case, the game came out 'raw', both in terms of gameplay and from the technical side – for several days of testing, it froze three times 'tightly' at the most inopportune moment, not to mention freezes and lags in the animation.
